Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha said on Wednesday that Albania would be open to accepting more prisoners from Guantanamo, but not the Chinese Uighurs that could endanger its relationship with China.
“Since my meeting in January with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton I have expressed a readiness to host more Guantanamo prisoners,” Berisha told reporters.
“My position is based on humanitarian grounds,” Berisha said, while adding that Albania would not accept any more Chinese Uighurs, because it does not want risk aggravating its good relationship with China.
Since 2006, Albania has accepted into its territory the relocation of nine former detainees of the Guantanamo prison. Five of the detainees were Chinese Uighurs, considered by China to be terrorists. The move sparked strong protest in China. Source: Balkaninsight
