Tirana, 21 Oct.2009 (AE) Albania lost 1200 jobs in the non agriculture sector in the first six month of 2009, the National Statistical Institute, INSTAT, reported on Tuesday. The number of Albanians employed in the nonfarm sector fell despite the extensive fiscal stimulus that the government offered by investing heavily in infrastructure projects.
At the end of June, there were 405,518 people employed in Albania, 166,453 of which belonged to the public sector. In December, the number of Albanians still receiving a salary fell to 404,282.
The apparel, garment and footwear industries were the hardest hit by the crisis. Exports fell by 20 per cent on the first two qaurters of 2009 and thousands of jobs were lost. Despite, such drastic drop in export by the appareal industry, a key employer in Albania, INSTAT’s report shows only a minor jumot in overall unemployment.
In June there were 141,335 jobseekers in Albania, the same as in December 2008. INSTAT considers unemployed in its tabulation only the active jobseekers and has classified several hundred thousand Albanians as “non-active jobseekers.” In addition, the government has classified 568,549 Albanians as “self-employed in agriculture,” a move that has come under fire by experts who argue that most farmers in the country are self subsistence farmers.
I believe it is still difficult to gauge the true level of unemployment in Albania for the moment. True, the global crisis has affected Albania, and some jobs have gone and some small businesses have disappeared. However, the job section of the Celesi paper is still running across about 9 x A3 pages, with jobs in Sales, Marketing, Accounting, Travel Agency, Call Centres, Hairdressing and Bars and Restaurants.
And with the busiest tourism season ever in Albania this year, job losses in this area seem to be minimal.
Still the government could do more to encourage employment with “traineeship programs” and more support for small business.
Its necessary that Bank of Albania have to be more sensitive about the credit level on economy. I think that actual credit crisis will evoke more unemployed. Governor Fullani must lead banking sector not to be only a honorable watcher of what is happening.
