Slovenia Tops Balkan Peace Index

Skopje | 03 June 2009 | Slovenia far outranks other Balkan countries, taking ninth place in the 2009 Global Peace Index out of 144 countries worldwide.

This year’s index was designed to measure the relative peacefulness of nations and regions around the world. Romania ranked second in the region, in 21st place worldwide, while Croatia, ranked third, with a considerable gap, in 49th place.

Bosnia and Herzegovina was ranked 50th, before Bulgaria at 56th, Greece at 57th, Albania at76th and Serbia at 78th. Macedonia follows at 88th, with Montenegro ranked as the least peaceful in the region, at 91st.

Kosovo was not included in the list.

The global index defines peace as “the absence of violence,” and looks at 23 different qualitative and quantitative indicators as measures. The percentage of the population in jail, availability of guns, and level of organized crime are among the indicators used.

The index is maintained by the Institute for Economics and Peace and developed in consultation with an international panel of peace experts from peace institutes and think tanks. It was launched for the first time in 2007.

On the global scale, New Zealand was ranked as the world’s most peaceful country, followed by Denmark and Norway. Iraq was again the world’s least peaceful country, remaining in 144th place. Afghanistan, Somalia, Israel and Sudan are also at the bottom.

Data shows that Bosnia and Herzegovina experience the largest jump in ranking, up 23 places to 50th place this year, while Madagascar saw the biggest fall in ranking, 30 places, amid mounting political instability and violent demonstrations.
