Violent Row Over Albania Chromium Mine

Tirana– Seven miners went trapped inside a chromium mine in Bulqiza district when a competitive company blocked the entry of the gallery, Balkanweb.com reported.
The miners were working for a company named Egi– K. Another company Vajkal 2007, blocked the entry with a heavy earth moving machinery claiming the right to use the mine.
Several companies are trying to use in maximum the so-called D Zone, the richest chromium mine in Albania were chromium ores are concentrated in 50-56%.
The ministry of economy has divided the zone between at least seven different companies.
Foreign investors expressed increased interest for Albania’s chromium reserves, especially during last hike in commodities prices that lasted until June 2008. D-Zone was developed during the Communist Era as a mining concentration camp for former political prisoners.
Albania owns large reserves of chromium ore, however lack of investments in last three decades has made its mines obsolete. Accidental deaths of miners are frequent. During 2007, Albania registered record exports of chrome and copper, due to the high prices in the international market.
