‘Silent Diplomacy’ Ensured Kosovo Peace

prsitina1United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon, says the world organisation preserved stability in Kosovo with a ‘silence’ diplomacy.

“We have managed to avoid a potentially explosive situation through a silence diplomacy,” Ban said in the last official conference of the UN for 2008.

Ban was referring to his mediation on the deployment of the European Union’s law-and-order mission, EULEX, which is set to become the main international presence in Kosovo as the United Nations Mission in Kosovo winds up, or ‘reconfigures.’

Ban’s Kosovo report to the UN Security Council which concluded with a presidential declaration of the Council welcoming EULEX, led towards a smooth deployment of the mission, which was initially rejected by Serbia and then by Kosovo Albanians.

“EULEX has already been deployed in Kosovo without any incident. I am confident that we can proceed with further reconfiguration of the UN mission in Kosovo through full cooperation with all parties and in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the Security Council,” said Ban.

Ban named 2009 the year of “climate change”, but he also talked about the most important political developments around the globe, including Kosovo.

Initially planned to be launched in December 2, EULEX was finally deployed on December 9.
