Tirana, Dec. 19, 2008 (AENews) – Austria’s EVN and Noway’s Statkraft signed today a euro 950 million euro deal with Albanian government for the construction of power storage and a chain of three hydro power plants in Albania, Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said in a press release.
“The unique size of the complexity of the Devoll hydropower project as the biggest ever investment in Albania, and currently the biggest Hydro Power Project in Europe, justified our enormous efforts,” EVN’s chief executive officer Burkhard Hofer said, quoted by Reuters news agency.
“I am really honoured to sign this important deal”, Albanian Minister of Energy Genc Ruli said.
The project includes three hydro power plant with total installed capacity of 339 MW and a projected annual production of 939 GWh.
Albania, the poorest country in Europe own huge reserves of hydro power. Till now, only 30 per cent of hydro power capacity is used to produce an average of 5000 GWh per year.
Albania has signed more than 100 concessionary agreement for small hydro power plants. On Sep. 30, it signed the first important agreement in this field for the construction of the Ashta hydro power plant. The bid for another important HPP, Skavica, was opened on Wednesday and the winner is expected to be announced early in January 2009.
