Tirana, Dec. 9, 2008 (AENews) – Heavy rains fueled two out of three biggest hydro power plants in Albania rising hopes for less power cuts this winter and improved financial situation of state owned Albanian Power Corporation, officials said on Tuesday.
Komani and Vau i Dejew hydro power plants reached their maximum capacities, while Fierza basin, the most important hydro power plant in the country is rising sharply.
Albania have three hydro power plants on Drini river with total installed capacity of 1350 MW. Annual production is on average 5 Terawatt. They cover 60% of Albanian electricity needs. Other two Hydro Power plants on Drini river will be build in the future. Ashta hydro power plant will produce 240 – 270 GW/h per year. Austrian company Verbund won a concessionary agreement on July 2008. The new hydro power plant will be commisioned non 2014.
Another concesionary agreement between Albanian Government and a group of italian companies, intends to build Skavica hydro power plant. Italian group TASSARA-GEOTECNA-KINGLOR intend to invest EUR538 million in this project. The new plant is projected to have a production capacity of 250 megawatt. This will also be the last projected plant to be constructed on this river.
The original project for the plant was realized in 1978, but at that time the estimated cost was very high for the Albanian state. If realized, Skavica will produce 1.3 Terawatt/hours electricity.
