Experts and columnists comment with skepticism Italian energy projects

Tirana, Dec. 8, 2008 (AENews) – Several experts and media columnists expressed skepticism about “Italian grandiose energy projects” that were signed in the presence of Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlucsoni in Albania last week.

Several projects worth Euro 2 Billion attracted attention from international media, including AP, Reuters and Financial Times, but are considered “more a political spectacle then a possible reality”.

“This is not the firs time that such grandiose promises are made publicly from Mr. Berlusconi”, - Mero Baze, columnist at daily Tema wrote on Thursday. “Six year ago, Mr. Berlusconi visit to Albania was accompanied by the presentation of another investment that included a undersea potable watter pipeline from Albania to Italy. We have discussed extensively on such project, but nothing happened really”, - Mr. Baze said. Former Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi, also promised a 2 billion euro investment for a coal fired electricity plant in Albania, project that now is already forgotten.

“They have promised to build a 500 MW wind farm, but this does not seems so realistic. Moncada is a small company compared to the 1 BN Euro investment promised”, said Gjergj Simaku an electricity expert.

News about grandiose projects are abundant in Albania. Government have already approved five different interconnection lines between Albania and Italy, but Italian Transmission Operator, Terna, had said on 2007 that intends to build three interconnection lines for whole Balkans.
