Tirana, Nov. 20, 2008 (AENews) – Italian ambassador in Tirana Saba D’Elia, said on Thursday that “between Albania and Italy there is a goodwill for the development of nuclear plants but there are not real projects under discussion,” dismissing voices from the Albanian government pushing for such projects.
D’Elia made this declaration during the presentation of Italian Investments in Albania.
“Italy needs such projetcs while Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha has the goodwill to develop the nuclear resoruces, but there is nothing more to this”, D’Elia said.
In May Sali Berisha declared for the Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera that he was interested in building a nuclear power plant.
“Yes, we are interested to build nuclear plants in our soil,” said Berisha at the time.
Earlier in April, different Italian politicians including new Minister of Finance Giulio Tremonti, declared that Berlusconi’s government wanted to explore nuclear energy resources and that Albania or Montenegro were pointed as possible countries that could host a plant.
Building nuclear plants in Italy has been banned by a referendum in 1987. The Italian government allowed energy giant ENEL to invest in nuclear energy out of Italy in 2004.
