Obama’s Win a Democracy Lesson for Albania

Tirana, 05 Nov. 2008 – Albania’s President Bamir Topi hailed the election of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States, as a lesson in democracy for Albania.

Topi praised Obama’s Republican rival John McCain’s concession speech, where he promised to help President-elect Obama to run the country.

“We all had a sleepless night, all Albanians and the whole world,” said Topi in an event held by the American Chamber of Commerce in Tirana and the United States embassy.

“I was impressed by John McCain’s concession speech, one of the most felt speeches in the race, but above all a message for the American people and his rival and this is a big lesson that Albania received,” said Topi.

“I believe that the relationship between Albania and the US will continue to be excellent, not good but excellent,” Topi added.

Topi also sent a letter to Obama, congratulating him on his victory.

“I have the special honor that in the name of the Albanian people and mine personally, to send you our best wishes on the occasion of your election as president of the United States,” reads the letter.

For the US Ambassador in Tirana, John L Withers, the election of Obama has changed the course of history, fulfilling the dream of famous African-American civil rights activist, Martin Luther King.

“Barack Obama fulfilled the dream of Martin Luther King, for an America without racial division,” said Withers.
