Mediterranean countries sign “open sky” agreement

Tirana, Nov. 5, 2008 (AENews) – Seven Mediterranean countries, signed Wednesday in Rome the so called open sky agreement that aim to facilitate airway traffic in the region. The new agreement called Blue Med will reduce costs for airline carriers thus reducing ticket prices for tourist destinations like Albania, Greece, Cyprus, Malta, Egypt, Tunisia and Jordan.
In the signing ceremony participated also EU deputy commissioner for Transport Mr. Antonio Tajani and representatives of Eurocontrol.

“Today we have an obsolete control of airline traffic. A new radar system aim to create a common European control agency. In this new system should participate as well Mediterranean countries that are not part of European Union”.

Open Sky agreements substitute bilateral agreements thus reducing obstacles for airline carriers and reducing costs. European Union signed last year a protocol with South East Europe countries, but in the case of Albania, such move has not yet been useful in terms of reducing ticket prices. According to the Blue Med agreement Italian agency ENAV will coordinate airline traffic.
