Tirana, 30 Oct, 2008 (AENews) – Albanian Government declared that it had agreed with Tirana Airport Partners consortium, (TAP), to compensate its losses and to liberalize international commercial flights in Albania.
A 2004 concessionary agreement, assigned to TAP a 20 year term exclusivity for international flights, making Rinas airport the only international airport in the country. In recent months, several foreign investors have expressed their intention to build a new airport in the south of Albania, to offer cheaper flights for touristic purposes.
“We have agreed to evaluate the looses of TAP through an independent assessment in order to open this market”, Prime Minister Sali Berisha declared yesterday. According to Mr. Berisha, Albanian government is willing to compensate TAP for looses inflicted by this step.
Rinas Airport registered 1.2m passengers during last year. TAP had invested USD 50M to build a new terminal.
