Tirana, 15 March 2008 – AENews – 17.30 – Representatives of the company responsible for the dismantling of ammunitions said that more than five thousand metric tons of artillery rockets were in the spot at the moment of the explosions.

Produced mainly in former Soviet Union and China, at least 40 years ago, they should have been dismantled two or three decades ago.

At the moment of the explosion, workers were on lunch time. “I was some dozen of meters out of the fabric at 12.00 o’clock when the explosion occurred. After the first explosion, workers had some minutes to escape”, – Dritan Minxolli, director of the fabric said. Mr. Minxolli, personally affected by the explosion, said that he could not give the exact number of employees present in the area at the moment of the explosion. He had contacted several workers, but four of them had not yet answered their mobile phones.

One of the survivors said that he had seen his colleagues escaping, while there were even some of them on fire, according to him.
