Opposition abandons electoral procedures in Shijak

Tirana, 12 March 2007
(AENews) – Opposition representative in the electoral process, held Sunday,
abandoned counting procedures and declared the process failed. The opposition
candidate, Igli Cela, withdrew from the race.

"I am declaring
my withdraw from these elections in order to avoid bloodshed", Mr. Cela
said. Early elections were held in Shijak, 30 km from Tirana. The tension has
been high during last days. This zone is considered as the battlefield of strong
figures from both sides. A considerable number of MPs were present during the
entire day with the alleged purpose “to protect the standards".

Meanwhile, the
government accused the opposition of creating an absurd climate of tension,
based on their fear of loosing elections in this zone. "Local elections,
held three weeks earlier, showed a strong advantage of the ruling coalition in
this zone", a government official said yesterday. Meanwhile, on the same
day, an election commissioner was wounded in one of a number of incidents that
have accompanied the process in this particular zone.

Final results,
published this morning, declared as winner the ruling coalition candidate,
after winning over 10,000 votes compared to about 1,000 votes for the
opposition candidate. These last election results marked a deeper victory for
the ruling coalition candidate than those held during the local elections of 18
February.

Shijak
is known as a strong base for different criminal groups, which are alleged to
have political ties.
