Albania still suffering from corruption, U.S. State department said

Tirana, March 7, 2007
(AENews) – U.S. State department published Thursday its report for Human Rights
observing that Albania is still suffering high levels of corruption in its
police service and tribunals as well as from low standards in the observance of
the rule of law.

"Low salaries for
public employees make it hard to fight corruption", the report noted.

Little progress was
made by the Albanian government to resolve the property disputes while the new
Agency for Properties Restitution and Compensation created in 2006, is working
slowly.

End of corruption is
the main and most important promise made by the current government.

The
U.S. State Department reported also that there was a major lack of adequate
programs by the Albanian government to help fight violence against women as
well as the influence of the medieval code "Kanuni", which is still
being used to resolve civil disputes, mainly due to the fact that the state
agencies do not always have the necessary authority in the entire territory of
the country.
