Parliament considers a resolution against Greek solders’ scandal

Tirana, 6 March 2007
(AENews) – Albanian Parliament discussed Monday the scandal of the video of a
Greek group of soldiers on exercise singing an anti-Albanian song. Several MPs
considered pushing a resolution about the issue, Gazeta Shqiptare daily
reported today.

The resolution is intended to fill the vacuum created by the
scarce reaction of the government, asking the Greek authorities to conduct a
serious investigation and bring an official prosecution against army officials
that permit such songs.

A private video
showing Greek solders singing "We are gone a make shoe-strings with
Albanian guts" was published last week.

Albanian Foreign
Minister, Besnik Mustafaj, said yesterday that he had reacted in a diplomatic
manner to the video, but had not accepted to publish the text of the presumed
official reaction, despite the fact that journalists had expressed doubts about
this.

"I would like to
thanks the Greek media and Greek politics for the correct reaction and
condemnation of the event", Mustafaj said. The government in Tirana is
trying to present the scandal as an "isolated case".

A Greek army
spokesperson said in Athens Monday that the Greek Ministry of Defense is
currently investigating the authenticity of the video.

Albanian Foreign
Ministry official webpage www.mfa.gov.al,
as usual has not published even the latest statement by Mr. Mustafaj, creating
doubts about the seriousness of the government’s reaction.

"This is simply not
the 'correct diplomatic reaction' from Mustafaj", commented Ela Ruci, in
an analysis article by ABC daily today. "This presents the deep fears and lack
of sovereignty in our foreign policy".

Top Channel, the
biggest television in the country found out yesterday that the two Albanians, whom
had burned a Greek flag Sunday in reaction to the Greek video, are now under
formal investigation from the local police charged with "nationalistic
hate incitement", a penal violation in Albania.

Top channel reported also that authorities are pursuing formal
prosecution for "nationalistic hate", in several cases, only against
Albanians, whiles Greek nationalism, expressed in "hate" in several
cases against Albanians within the country’s territory, has escaped the
prosecution.
