Bamir Topi nominated candidate for president
Uncategorized Tuesday, March 6th, 2007(AENews) – Prime Minister Sali Berisha presented his party’s candidate for the
presidency yesterday, in a political move commented as a "bluff", by
the media.
"Mr. Topi is our
candidate for the head of state. If the parliament does not accept this
candidacy, we will go for early elections”, said he.
Mr. Berisha said he
was sure Mr. Bamir Topi, deputy chairman of Democratic party (DP), would receive
not only the support of the ruling coalition, but also that of the opposition.
Mr. Topi, who is the next in line to lead the DP, has not commented on the
nomination.
There are very few
possibilities for the 49-year old Mr. Topi to gain the approval of the opposition,
while Mr. Berisha said that his party is preparing to go for early elections if
its candidate would not be elected. In response the opposition commented that
Mr. Berisha has pushed for Mr. Topi’s candidacy unliterary, without first consulting
with them.
Newspapers
commented the event as an attempt to damage Mr. Topi's political credibility in
the right wing. Mr. Topi is the most popular politician in the country,
according to a pool by the International Democratic Institute. Mr. Berisha is
under pressure to bring to a close his political career. At that moment Mr.
Topi will be his possible successor.
