Christian Democratic Party appoints a mufti to run for major of Rogozhina

Tirana, 31 Jan. (AENews) – Christian Democratic Party (CDP) appointed a mufti as its candidate to run for major of Rogozhina town in central Albania. This has caused protests as well as some bewilderment in the Media.

 
CDP is known as the political representative of Catholic population in Albania. They have eight seats in parliament, all of whom are of catholic faith, however appointing of the mufti, Tomor Baballani, to run for major of the town is viewed as an attempt to broaden their voter base among the majority Muslim population.
 
This is the first time that a cleric runs as a candidate in the Albanian politics. A Muslim NGO condemned his appointment as a political use of religion sentiments in the country.
 
Muslims in Lezha, the town were Ballabani serves as mufti has asked for his immediate demission from all religious duties.
