Electoral campaign for Albanian municipality continues. Main political parties have now submitted their full lists of candidates for local parliaments in the main cities. Shekulli daily
Opposition Socialist Party (SP) is reported to be loosing some of its supporters after it agreed to fulfill requirements from a pre-electoral alliance with the Socialist Movement for Integration (SMI), third largest party in the country. The alliance agreement ensures the running of LSI joint candidates in several towns which are considered strongholds of SP. Some opposition supporters believe that such an agreement will cause them to lose votes and as a result are considering about presenting independent candidacies in upcoming the election. ABC daily
Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha declared Wednesday that Albania will sign the international moratorium to ban death punishment. The moratorium is presented by Italy to the United Nation as a reaction for execution of former Iraqi dictator Sadam Hussein in December 2006. Mr. Berisha commented the execution of Sadam Hussein as "the end of a fair trial", without condeming it. Shekulli daily
Albanian Energy Regulatory Authority (ERA) reported the conclusions of a paper about the electricity price diversification based on hours of the day. The project intends to introduce lower prices during the night and higher ones during the day, using an American model for improving efficiency. State monopoly KESH, immediately commented the proposal as non realistic. The project requires for new investments which are out of KESH’s current main objectives. Panorama daily
Former Prime Minister Fatos Nano has begun a "parallel electoral campaign" trying to get supporters for his political ambitions, according to the media. Wednesday, Mr. Nano visited Librazhd and Elbasan, hours after the officials of the Socialist Party had presented their candidates for local elections. Gazeta Shqiptare, ABC daily
Albania is suffering (and enjoying) heavy rains and floods for the second day after an unusually dry winter. The country’s main ports, Durres and Vlora, have been closed due to strong winds and high waves. Meanwhile, electricity production should improve from large hydro power plants in the north, which were near to being closed till yesterday. Floods are reaching 250 m3\sec in Fierza hydro power plant, which is very important for electricity production. "We remain far from a normal situation", KESH officials commented, but "we hope that the rain will improve electricity reserves". ABC daily
