Albanian businesses offer EUR 150 million for a piece of Albtelecom

Tirana, Sep. 19 (AENews) – An Albanian consortium of businesses is prepared to offer EUR 150m more for the 74% stake of shares from the State owned fixed line corporation Albtelecom. This offer is EUR 30m higher than the original and single offer which was made by the Turkish consortium of Calik Group and Turkish Telecom.

This latest proposal came on the verge of the government decision to renegotiate with Calik Group the terms for the sale of Albtelecom. The decision came after a visit to Turkey by Prime Minister Berisha where he met with Turkish President Erdogan.

When Albtelecom was first put up for privatization, the Albanian government had effectively restricted Albanian businesses from bidding through regulation requiring all bidding companies to have at least 10 years of fixed phone line experience.

However, the government’s latest talks about renegotiating the contract with Calik Group, which itself does not have that experience, has in turn given birth to hopes of privatization to Albanian businesses.
