GE threatened to bring charges against Albanian government

Tirana, March 28 (AENews) – The Italian subsidiary of General Electric (GE) has allegedly threatened to bring charges against the Albanian government for blocking implementation of a project signed by the previous government for the renovation of the Tirane–Durres railway.

The news was announced by Gazeta Shqiptare daily newspaper, which was referring to a letter sent by GE to the Albanian Minister of Transport, Lulzim Basha.

According to the newspaper, GE had requested to be contracted for another Albanian project of comparable proportions otherwise the company would ask for indemnification through a legal process.

The Albanian Minister of Transport, Basha, confirmed his communication with GE, but did not explicitly confirm the allegation. “This large and prestigious company has of course its own opportunities, capacities and interests, which at specific times cross with those of the Albanian government and that where we believe that the main aspect of future cooperation lies between GE and the Albanian government,” Basha said.

Meanwhile, in a pronouncement for AENews the corporation said, “GE remains committed to supporting the further development and upgrading of Albania’s infrastructure but intends seeking assurances from the Albanian Government that contractual agreements are adhered to,” Communications Manager, Shaunda Parks said.

Back in 2005, the Albanian government cancelled the work for a rehabilitation project for the Tirane-Durres railway. The project was worth about US$100 million for which the previous government had even signed a loan agreement with ABN AMRO.
