Tirana, Dec. 13 (AENews) – Albania's milling industry uses mostly imported grain. The five important milling plants in the country cover about 50% of market needs according the data from the factories and the Ministry of Food & Agriculture. Total investments in this sector reach EUR20 million for 2004.
In the past few years local beer producers have made investments totaling up to EUR30-40 million with production capacity providing for more then 120% of national beer consumption. Meanwhile, Albania imports more then 40% its beer consumption. The beer industry is now under property of important lobbing which have influenced state administration in terms of protectionism and negotiations free trade agreement with Balkan country and European Union. The risks for this industry come mostly from Greece and Serbia.
In 2003, Belgian based Interbrow has bought important Serbian beer producer, Pivara, for EUR256 million. This is only one of much important investments in beer industry in Balkan. Compared to these, Albanian investments in beer industry are not so munch.
Milk factories
Albanians use mostly non-pasteurized milk and cheese is produced in small non-industrialized plant. There are 60 small milk factories, which produce mostly yogurt and cheese. Pasteurized and packaged milk have not find buyers in Albanian market. There are only a few important investments, in order from EUR1 million to EUR3 million in milk processing.
Packaging comes mostly from imports. Albanian imports in paper and packaging product reached EUR40 million in 2004, according to preliminary data. This is important, compared to all food industry product evaluated to EUR200 million per year.
Cheese factories
Albanians like more cheese produced in Albania. According data from Ministry of Agriculture, for the 9-month 2004, cheese production have reach 10600 metric tone, up 9.2 % to 9-month 2003. With the medium market price of Lek300 (EUR2.4) per kg, cheese production has reach EUR30 million for FY 2004. This is only a small part of potential of the sector. According experts of agriculture, only 10-15 % of milk produced in Albania arrives at milk factories. Albania has produced 1.1 million metric ton of milk in 2004, up to 4 % from 2003.
