Vehicle imports fall 50 % during Q1 2005

Tirana, July 14 (AENews) – The number of imported cars for Q1 2005 fell by 50%, compared to Q1 in 2004, according to data released by the Albanian National Institute of Statistic (INSTAT).

Based on INSTAT-s data’s, for the Q1 2005 the total number of imported cars was estimated at just 2,660 or a 50 percent fall compared to the same period during 2004 when that number was recorded at 5,470 cars.

Q1 estimation of imported cars is also 65 percent lower than the total number of imported cars for Q1 in 2003, when it was estimated at 4,400 cars.

Different car concessionaires have claimed a considerable rise in sales for the first five months of the year, which for them should mean that their lobby has now started to pay its dividends.

This impact is directly indicated by the decreased car import levels. This decrease resulted through the car concessionaires lobbying and was by the end of last year  led the Albanian Parliament to approve new law to try and control the inflow of used cars.

Approval of this law was motivated by the initiate of MPs in an effort to limit pollution from used cars being imported in Albania.

However, nongovernmental environmental movements denied that this was the real reason.

During FY 2004, the number of imported cars was estimated at 27,614 vehicles, or 25.4 percent more then FY 2003. Meanwhile, during 2004 only 1556 of all imported cars were new the rest were all used.
