New Prime Minister Berisha may visit Germany first

Tirana, July 14 (AENews) – Well-informed sources said today that former-president Sali Berisha, who is now excepted to become the country’s new Prime Minister, intends to visit Germany first after receiving official nomination.

The Democratic Party, which Berisha leads, won the parliamentary elections last July 3.
Some analysts believe that Berisha will put Albanian vote at the UN General Assembly in favor of Germany, which wants to increase the number of Security Council’s permanent members, in contrast to position of Italy which has asked for an increase the number of nonpermanent Security Council members.

Both Italy and Germany had asked the outgoing Prime Minister Fatos Nano for the Albanian vote. At first, Fatos Nano had promises Tirana’s vote to Rome, but then had changed his mind in front of pressure from both parties.

Italy and Germany are both very important donors for Albania. According to statistics from the Ministry of Finance, Albania’s bilateral debt to Italy amounts to EUR140m, while the country’s debt to Germany is estimated at EUR100m.
