United States does not support a particular party in Albania’s elections

Tirana, June 28 (AENews) – US ambassador in Tirana Marcie Ries responded today to an opposition’s call for a clear position of the United States in regard to Albania’s parliamentary elections scheduled for July 3.

“The United States Government does not support any particular party or any particular candidate. Anyone who suggests or pretends otherwise is wrong. What the United States does support is a process conducted in compliance with international standards and one, which represents the will of the Albanian People”, Ms. Ries said during a Roundtable on free and fair elections organized by the Albanian Institute for International Studies.

On Monday, the right wing opposition leader accused Prime Minister Fatos Nano for using old images from his meeting with President Bush in their electoral advertising as a lie trying to convict the people that this government is supported by the United States.

Opposition spokesman, Lulezim Basha, asked journalists to call the White House press office and ask if the U.S. government had any preference in Albania’s elections.

The Socialist Party in power has build parts of their electoral campaign on the good international image, created from Albania’s participation in the World Coalition against Terror. On diverse occasions Prime Minister Nano has spoken made allegations against the opposition leader Sali Berisha, using terms relating him to fundamentalism and religious contradictions.
