Birra Tirana, agreement to export beer in Greece
Tirana, May 26 (AENews) – Local beer producer Birra Tirana has signed a contract with OK ATHENS, a Greek company, to exports and distribute their products in the neighbor country. Marketing Director Bernard Jace told to Biznesi daily in Tirana.
“Our intention is to exports our products in all the countries where ethnic as well as Albanian emigrants live”, Jace said.
Birra Tirana’s business plan is to export 7, 000 hectoliters to Greece, which is more then 1/3 of its production capacity.
Birra Tirana is a Pilsner brand of beer produced in Albania, and named after the capital Tirana. It was first produced in 1961 by the Kombinati Ushqimor (a state enterprise). The beer contains 4% alcohol.
Birra Tirana was privatized in 2001. The company used to produce 5,000 tons a year prior to its privatization, while currently is production capacity is estimated at 13,000 tons per year, with exports going to Kosovo and the United States.
Birra Tirana accounts for a large percentage of all beers sold in Albania, up to 30% of the market.
In these last two years Birra Tirana has made a total of US$8 million, resulting in a doubling of its production capacity. Sales for 2004 reached 13, 000 metric tons, according to data from the company.
