The loan of euro54,085,514 and US$11,518,877 is due to be used for the implementation of a modernization project for Hekurudha Shqiptare Sh.A, the state owned railway operator in Albania. Further details about the terms of this loan are not yet known for the moment.
The project envisages the building of the first electric railways in Albania stretching from the capital Tirana to the country’s main seaport of Durres, (40 km).
The railway is also projected to establish a link with the International Airport of Tirana. Two years ago the Albanian government was offered to build this railway though a concessionary contract with General Electric Transportation Systems S.P.A, the Italian branch of the giant US corporate. An agreement was then signed in September 2003.
