Blackouts to start again in September Print E-mail
Tirana, July 4, 2007 (AENews) – State power monopoly KESH reported recently that the country would suffer long blackout hours in September due to insufficient levels of domestic production and the lower levels of imports, which would not guarantee normal supply.

"We have a deficit of 800 millions KWh and this deficit will be covered by blackouts", a KESH official said.

Albania has suffered continued chronic electricity crisis which have been caused by mismanagement and lack of investments since 2002. The country become net importer of electricity in 1999, but needs for imports ran beyond import capacities in 2002. Now, Albania needs to import 2.5 BN kWh per year, which could cost up to EUR 200 million.
